1969 Falkland Island (Malvinas). A brown skua or Falkland skua Stercorarius antarcticus 'dive bombing ' on Carcass Island, West Falkland. Our host Cecil Bertrand who knew the birds well, said 'watch out for the skuas they'll bomb you'. So while I filmed Marion took some stills. It took her six attempts to get this shot because our Nikons did not have motor winding for advancing the film and auto-focus was still a dream. Marion had to press the shutter as the bird with its 60 inch (152 centimetres) wingspan entered the focus zone she had chosen by eye and measured by hand.

Camera: Nikon F 35mm Single Lens Reflex with Nikkor 50mm F1.4 lens. Film - Kodak Plus X Pan 1/1000 second F5.6. Developed by hand in Stanley in the darkroom of local photographer John Leonard using Kodak Microdol at normal dilution.
