1961 January - India. Ooticamund [now Udhagamandalam], Tamil Nadu state. Tea picking in the Nilgiri Hills. At an altitude of just over 7000 feet the Nilgiris and 'Ooty' rivalled Simla [now Shimla] in the Himalayan foothills. Many British tea planters settled there and the plush Ooticamund Club offered a haven from the humid heat of the coast. On my journey with the University Expedition we were given 'tea at the Club' by the last of the long time planters.
